“Lone Cypress”

Location: Pebble Beach, California (2018)

The Lone Cypress of Pebble Beach basks in the glory of late October sunlight.

As fate would have it, the Lone Cypress would lose its leftmost branch in a storm the following winter. This photograph was taken in the fall prior (2018).

I had come to Pebble Beach specifically to photograph this tree and to enjoy 17-Mile Drive. Both are as famous as the golfing here and as someone who does not golf, this was my opportunity to see the golf course.

Located on the Southwestern edge of the coast, the Lone Cypress doesn’t look all that lonely if you ask me. The best composition I could find makes the Lone Cypress the first in a succession of trees seemingly about to jump of the edge of the cliff!

But in my moment of photography, I was too busy noticing the way in which the sun’s rays struck the tree – giving the Lone Cypress a dignified look that gave it a somewhat heroic appearance. As if it could defy the odds of physicals and natural laws.
