Location: Highway 93, Nevada/Arizona (2018)

Photographed from the Hwy 93 bypass, Hoover Dam, constructed during the Great Depression, is arguably one of the most iconic dams in the world.

Obtaining a bird’s-eye view of Hoover Dam is now free for anyone that stops and walks the bypass.

But while access to this spot is simple, the atmospheric conditions that produced a shadow free photograph are not. (With nearly 300 days of sunshine a year, a cloudy sky, doesn’t come often.)

Fortunately, tropical storm Sergio was passing through during my visit. This meant there were several days in succession that were cloudy as well as rainy!

Taking advantage of the opportunity, I drove down to Hoover Dam and captured this image as if I had been flown here by helicopter.
