“Coming Home”

Location: Fort Baker, Sausalito, California (2019)

Sunlight strikes the edge of a sailboat at it enters San Francisco Bay after passing underneath the Golden Gate Bridge on an overcast day.

Patience is always required when waiting for moving elements to align.
(It’s during these periods of waiting where I really notice my surroundings and enjoy the moment of being outside on this living planet.)

The sailboats of San Francisco Bay appear to come in and out as they please. Their white sails contrast strongly with the International Orange color of the Golden Gate Bridge.

All I was focused on, in this moment, was capturing a sailboat coming into the frame. (Often, a boat would be closer to the other side of the bridge, too small to see in the photograph)

Finally, I could see the mast of a sailboat close enough to photograph!

And then, unexpectedly, the sunlight began to break through the clouds like a spot light.
My heartbeat raced as I knew the moment would be brief.

The timing had to be right.
